Robot vacuum cleaners have been around for some time now, but we never really bought the idea of them cleaning our houses. Well, you might be wrong, as robot vacuum cleaners have actually changed in about 10 years since the first robot vacuum cleaners hit the market.
The latest robot vacuum Neato Botvac robotic vacuum cleaners from Corvan, a local pioneer status company that specializes in smart living home appliances has brought this cool looking vacuum cleaner here to Malaysia. Designed and developed in the United States by robot vacuum specialist Neato Robotics Inc, the highly intelligent device scans its surrounding before planning and creating the most detailed and accurate cleaning path for a home environment.
That’s right, it scans its surrounding before moving into action. This is the world’s smartest robot vacuum cleaner every built and design. It is equipped with the high tech Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) navigation system which uses the same technology as the Google Driverless Car and also unmanned aerial vehicles (Drone).
SLAM is the computational problem of constructing or updating a map of an unknown environment while simultaneously keeping track of an agent’s location within. It allows the robot vacuum to continuously scan the room for obstacles, doorways and furnitures in order to clean systemically using a logic that is much like a human’s.
Not only that, Neato BotVac 85 software is also upgradable via Corvan’s website with a standard USB cable whenever a new software is released making the Neato the only robot that can ”grow smarter”.
(i) Compared to other robot vacuums out there
Neato BotVac 85 is the only robot vacuums that has SLAM navigation system built in the robot. This means, Neato BotVac 85 does not do random cleaning. It does not clean the same place twice. It moves systematically throughout your house. It cleans every place where it can go. Compared to robot vacuum cleaners it doesn’t. Other robot vacuum move in random and they do not do a good job in cleaning.
(ii) Cleaning performance compared to other robot vacuums
The problem with most robotic vacuum cleaners we’ve tried in the past is that while they are okay for light work, they aren’t that powerful and therefore always miss dirt, especially around the edges of a room.
The Botvac 85 doesn’t have a 100 per cent success rate with uptake, although we were a lot more impressed with its performance. That’s likely down to the Botvac’s brush being around 50 per cent larger than those found on other robot vacuums and that combo brush can operate within 10 millimetres of a wall to catch the harder-to-get debris. It is also good at cleaning carpets. It picks up tiny dust particles stuck on the carpet.
A friendly interface:
Having the Botvac 85 feels like you are having a pet at home. It’s designed to pick up pet hair, but it almost becomes a robotic pet in itself. The interface of this robot vacuum cleaner is pretty straight forward. Setting up a timer is easy, although with only a couple of buttons to set the timer, it’s cumbersome.
The Scheduling function enables users to conveniently schedule daily cleaning, and offers instant multi room or spot vacuuming options with just a touch of a button.
Once the Botvac 85 is turned on, it will do the cleaning without being told where to clean. Once its battery life is depleted it will return back to the dock to recharge automatically. The electric cost of running this thing is pretty cheap too. If it is cleaning on a daily basis, you will only fork out another RM1 on your electric bills monthly.
What’s inside the this robot?:
So what else is included inside the case when you purchase this robot vacuum cleaner? Well, the Neato Botvac 85 comes with two main elements, which is the cleaning unit and its docking station for it to recharge once it runs out of battery.
In the box you also get a magnetic strip to mark out any boundaries you want to set and replacement filters and brushes. If you don’t want your Neato Botvac 85 to certain areas in the house you can always use this magnetic strip to mark out places for it not to go.
The latest Neato BotVac 85 is further enhanced with a special magnetic side brush for precise edge cleaning. The side brush goes right up against the walls to get deep into the corners in order to maximize the cleaning coverage.
It also comes with wider hybrid helix brush and a bigger dirt bin. It offers superb cleaning efficiency when combined with the jet engine designed vacuuming turbine. The hybrid helix brush dislodges stubborn and ground in dirt and cleans more efficiency than earlier models.
Everything sounds good but what about the bad part of this robot vacuum cleaner?
Like it is mention above, the Botvac 85 doesn’t have a 100 per cent success rate with uptake but it is still impressive in many levels. The Botvac does have the ability to raise up on its haunch legs so to speak, to get over odd obstacles around it. If you got wires or little objects around, it can get tangled with the robot vacuum cleaner. If you have too many furnitures around your house, it tends to get stuck in certain places.
In fairness, it’s not the robot’s fault, but it’s something that you need to be aware of. To get the best performance from the Botvac you need to have a room that is clutter free so it can do its job.
Overall, the Neato Botvac 85 does clean well. It does a good cleaning job up to the edges and don’t expect it to climb stairs (It can’t so you need to use the magnetic strips to block it’s part). Install the Botvac 85, set it going once a day, and short of having to empty the bag you’ll never have to worry about vacuum cleaning again. It’s here that the Neato is perfect, so long as its environment is right.
The Neato BotVac 85 is priced at RM3,788. It is best to get it from Corvan because the Neato Botvac 85 in Malaysia are all tweaked to conditions here in Malaysia. If you are planning to ship one from America, you will have trouble as those machines are not conditioned for the Malaysian weather. For more info, visit http://www.corvan.com.my/
