KUALA LUMPUR – It was announced this morning that the MRT tunnels beneath Jalan Bukit Bintang has been completed, leaving overall completion of the tunnelling work at 88%.
The MRT project works stood at 68.5% as at the end of September while the overall tunnelling completion is at 88%. All tunnelling works are expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2015 but the underground works will continue until December 2016.
MMC-Gamuda Head of Tunnelling Ng Hau Wei said the completion of tunnelling was very challenging due to the geology of the area. Other than that, the other challenges faced are the highest concentration of utilities. High precision engineering technology, including Variable Density TBM (tunnel boring machines) had mitigated the problem.
The Sungai Buloh – Kajang MRT will be covering 51 km that will run through the city centre, including 9.5km underground.
