A Kenyan football fan committed suicide over the weekend when he was unable to cope with Manchester United’s loss to Newcastle United , a senior Kenyan police official said on Monday.
The man, Jon Macharia, 28, plunged to his death from a multi-storey apartment in Nairobi after Manchester United suffered a second home defeat in four days which would dent the champions chances of them retaining the Premier League title.
Manchester United lost 0-1 to Newcastle on Saturday, 8/12/2013.
According to the County Police Commander Benson Kibui, ‘Macharia jumped from the seventh floor of an apartment at Pipeline Estate after watching his team lost to Newcastle at Old Trafford’.
This was the first win of Newcastle against Manchester United at home since 1972. Manchester United are now 13 points away from the league leaders, Arsenal.
Also in 2009, A Kenyan Arsenal fan was found hanging in his flat after the Gunners lost 3-1 to Manchester United in the second leg of a Champions League semi-final game.
Kibui urged soccer-obsessed Kenyan fans to support local teams rather than foreign clubs who do not have a link to the east African nation that is best known in the sporting world for producing middle and long-distance champion runners.
‘The football fans should enjoy the matches… but they should not commit suicide since life is very precious,’ Kibui added.
